KGNU reporting/teaching team includes Sarah Hughes, Shelley Schlender and Maeve Conran. Sarah, Shelley and Maeve are all professional reporters who have worked in radio, print, video and other media. They love to teach other people how to tell their stories, and they’re excited to be working with Ashley Elementary. As for KGNU, we’re an independent, noncommercial community radio station licensed in Boulder and Denver and dedicated to serving its listeners. We seek to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals, groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media
Maeve Conran is News Co-Director at KGNU. Her stories have appeared on Free Speech Radio News and KRCC radio in Colorado Springs. Maeve hails from Ireland. Her interests include health, nutrition, child development and grassroots citizen activism.
Sarah Hughes is the founding director of WAMU’s Youth Voices. Her freelance radio reports includeTraining for the Test (Citizenship Test), and Comic Book Science in the Classroom.
Nikki Kayser is KGNU Membership Director. She’s a regular voice on KGNU, and she is also an elementary school teacher and the creator of the popular .dot org features that broadcast on KGNU at 7 AM.
Ellen Mahoney teaches journalism for the University of Colorado and has done radio stories for KGNU and for KRCC as well.
Shelley Schlender does stories for TV, All Things Considered,The Voice of America. She’s a founding mentor ofOverdub: Youth Radio Outloud. Shelley and her husband, Greg, have two sons, Walt and Amory, and a dog named Daisy. She loves to cook with lots of vegetables.
